Walk for Want - 8 for 80
This year we are reflecting in a number of ways on the arrival of the Missionary Franciscan Sisters in Kedron 80 years ago. To raise awareness of some of the missionary projects of our sisters, some Sisters accompanied staff and girls of Mt Alvernia College on a “Walk for Want” on 6th May - the Feast of the Foundress,

Before leaving the College walkers bought $8 tokens with money they had raised from sponsors. They chose which projects they would support by depositing their tokens in specific barrels along the walk. Sisters who were unable to walk were at the College to pin a medallion of Elizabeth Hayes on each participant arriving back.
It so happened that Sr Jo Scanlan was here from Wewak and spoke to the girls about the work of the sisters at Stella Maris. In a beautiful setting overlooking the Bismark Sea, the sisters welcome women who have been abused or who need space and peace. With the rising of the sea level, part of the property is under serious threat so considerable money and a great deal of hard work has already gone into building up a barricade of stones and gravel, transported quite a distance from the river, along part of the threatened frontage. The local people, who know so well the moods of the sea, advise the sisters to wait until the next ‘wet season’ to see how the wall holds when the sea is at its roughest. Some proceeds from the Walk for Want will enable further work to be done.
The poster attached gives an insight into projects in MFIC missions of Bolivia and Peru which will also benefit from the 8 for 80 Walk. Without doubt, all these sisters will be thanking God for the generosity and enthusiasm of our Mt. Alvernia community.
