Australian Governance Circle Logo

(Created by Brisbane artist Jenny Close)
This Logo was commissioned to celebrate
the new structure of the Australian Governance Circle drawn up by the
Sisters searching together for an appropriate contemporary expression
of our Franciscan way of life reflecting our call to communion in mission
and growth into "a more relational way of living according to the principles
of Clare" (Ch. Statement 2001).
The stars of the Southern Cross are the dominant
feature. They remind us of our locality in the southern hemisphere.
The green and gold of the circle, the earth, is specifically Australian.
The Southern Cross which hangs in our skies
reminds us that Christ watches over us. It is a reminder of our Franciscan
heritage — of the stigmata of St Francis and the call to conversion.
Each point of the five-pointed stars is tinged with red. We embrace
the cross of Christ as the symbol of our Christian life — we
are continually dying to ourselves to rise to a transformed life in
Jesus, the Crucified and Risen One.
The earth is set in the wider universe.
The colours swirl in circles which remind us that we are one circle of
the many that form our Institute. Our emblem can be distinguished embracing
the world. It symbolizes the way we embrace the whole Institute — for
we are just one circle of a wider Circle. It also symbolises the many
ways the Sisters of the Institute, and of our circle, embrace the world
through a variety of ministries. Our mission is to be a catalyst of
communion in whatever we do.
The blue background and Southern Cross remind us
also that we are under the patronage of Mary of the Southern Cross.
As she stood beneath the Cross on Calvary, so now she stands beneath
the Southern Cross as our help and protector.
